In the west shadows of the down town central business district of Tampa the Hyde Park and South Tampa areas feature some of the areas most charming and treasured homes, two livable islands (Davis Island and Harbor Island), an airport and Tampa's busiest hospital.The first residential subdivision, Hyde Park, was built in South Tampa in the 1920s. A short time later, the man-made Davis Island was developed. Davis Island is a historic area of significant architecture and home to the Davis Island Yacht Club. Harbour Island is one of the area's exclusive residential areas, with elegant homes and is a fully gated island community. Here the streets wind past stately homes with beautiful landscaping. South Tampa is adjacent to Hillsborough Bay, just south of downtown Tampa. The prime location gives residents easy access to downtown for work, shopping and fun. Recreation areas include the beaches and South Tampa parks, which offer playgrounds, tennis courts, ball fields, and picnic areas. The dog park at Davis Island Beach allows residents of the furry, four-legged variety to play in the sand and water. Tampa features a full cultural events calendar including the city's main event held each January. Gasparilla - the nationally recognized reenactment of the siege of the city of Tampa by pirates is always a lot of fun. Each January the bay fills with boats and floats in a Mardi Gras style festival with events for every member of the family. Parades are held on the mainland and the event is a multi-day affair. There are a number of golf courses in the area including the exclusive Palma Ciea Golf Club. Palma Ceia exists today as one of Tampa's most exclusive communities. The antique, red brick roads shaded by enormous oaks and its intimate neighborhood character make Palma Ceia a portico of beautiful homes centrally located within Tampa. Considered one of Tampa's premier neighborhoods, Palma Ceia has maintained consistent appeal to Tampa natives since the early 1920's. Students in grades K-12 attend highly acclaimed schools of the Hillsborough County School District. Nearby colleges and universities include the University of South Florida, The University of Tampa (enrollment of 5300) is located in the South Tampa area (housed in the historic Plant Hotel famous for it's unusual architectural style) and the Stetson College of Law. Private schools in the area include Berkeley Prep and Tampa Prep. Tampa is a culturally and ethnically diverse city that is among the fastest growing in the country. Mixed with luxurious high rise condominium buildings this area is Tampa's most upscale are of urban chic. Bordered on the south by Tampa Bay the most well known street of the area is Bayshore Blvd. Known for it's open views of the bay and extended sidewalk for outdoor activities and parades it's a popular location for locals.
